Felted inspirations
My mother Irma Rasehorn has made textiles by wet felting since 1975. When she started felting, very little information about this skill was available. Little by little she gathered information about different techniques of both felting and dyeing. For example early Asian gravefinds with their colourful carpets and walltextiles inspired her to try several techniques of felting time after time. Finally she developed one special technique of her own which enables felting of very small and precise details.
For a long time mother tried to talk me into the world of felting. Without hesitation I always said no, it didn't seem like my kind of hobby. Then one day I wanted to have a felted walltextile hanging on my livingroom wall. Mother refused to make one for me, but instead she offered to teach me how to make one myself. Surprisingly it was love at first touch!
In my profession as a master of dressmaking of historical ladies' costumes for theatre I have studied styles and patterns of different epochs. I find ornamentation especially fascinating. It is my biggest source of inspiration in designing new walltextiles. It is also exciting to play with shapes and colours to see how they match together.
My latest passion has become felting combinations of wool and silk. I dye all the wool and silk I use myself. Designing and laying patterns on a woollen surface with the wet and soapy wool is demanding and needs a lot of patience. This stage can take several days. The desire of seeing the walltextile finished gives me energy to complete the work. Each handmade work is unique.
I make felted walltextiles also by order for both public spaces and private people. In acoustically problematic rooms felted walltextiles are an especially good choice.
